Global Voices Summit - Colombo - Dec 2017

Global Voices Summit 2017, an annual summit organized by Global Voices, was held in Colombo on Dec 2, 3. I attended the summit along with Mr. Mayooranathan to represent Tamil Wikipedia community.

The event was held at Trace Expert City, Colombo 10 over the weekend of Dec 2 & 3. The event started around 10 am and I attended the inaugural session at the main building and then went to the Open Street Maps session that held at a one of the tents outside the main building. That was a useful session as a Wikipedian who wants to promote open and free access.

Both sessions on Wikipedia were scheduled after lunch. Mayooranathan started the presentation on Tamil Wikipedia in the first session after lunch. He presented the history and potential. I continued the presentation, explaining the current status and how the recent contest that we had in Tamil Wikipedia to improve the most important 1000 articles that every Wikipedia should have. Few participants from the Summit attended the session.
Global Voices Summit 2017 - Day 1 (Rehman) (43)

The second session was a demonstration on editing Wikipedia. I started the session by introducing English Wikipedia to the participants and started an article on Global Voices Summit.
Global Voices Summit 2017 - Day 1 (Azeez) (7)

I created a small article on Global Voices Summit in English Wikipedia. Rehman showed how to add a reference and how to add categories. It was also attended by a small group.

Finally, I was part of a panel discussion on the topic 'Is credibility cross cultural?'. The session was moderated by Connie Moon Sehat - an activist of Global Voices and the panel consisted of 3 people including me. Marie Bohner talked on the topic related to media coverage of election in France and Sanjib Chaudhary presented his views on Nepali constitutional changes and the minority views. I talked about a discussion on a Wikipedia article related to ethnic conflict where two users of different ethnicity had different views and how a consensus was achieved. Around twenty participants attended the panel discussion and asked questions. It was a very useful and different experience.

Overall, attending the Global Voices Summit was great. It gave us an opportunity to spread awareness of Wikipedia, but the impact is low. The best positive of attending the summit was meeting Rehman and the discussion on how we can take forward Wikipedia activities in Sri Lanka.
